Governor Wes Moore has called the Maryland General Assembly back to Annapolis for a special legislative session, set to convene on Tuesday, December 16th.

During the special session, the General Assembly will:

  • Elect a new Speaker of the House
Delegate Adrienne Jones — who made history as Maryland’s first Black and first woman Speaker — has stepped down after six years in the role. The House will now elect her successor.

  • Consider gubernatorial vetoes
The Maryland Constitution requires lawmakers to first consider any vetoed bills from the previous session before moving on to other topics.

  • Take Up Potential Additional Business
Governor Moore’s executive order authorizes the General Assembly to consider “other business” — but it’s still unclear what, if anything, that might include.

A special session in Maryland can last for up to 30 days.
