On Saturday October 18th, the League of Women Voters of Maryland (LWVMD) and several local Leagues in Maryland participated in organized peaceful rallies under the NO KINGS name. We understand that, for some, it may feel more comfortable for the League to stay silent and not weigh in on policies that are directly impacting Marylanders. But we must speak up.
In today's political climate, LWVMD feels that we are not only called to act in the face of threats to democracy, but it is our duty to be on the front lines — especially for those who cannot. Over the past nine months we have seen:
- The unjustified deployment of troops that militarize U.S. cities;
- The redrawing of electoral maps that gerrymander districts and dilute votes, and therefore, representation;
- Policies and directives that restrict mail-in voting or impose added burdens on voters just to register to vote; and
- The continued, undemocratic targeting and intimidation of anyone who speaks out
Our nonpartisanship prohibits us from endorsing or opposing candidates or political parties. But nonpartisanship does not mean staying on the sidelines and being complicit. More and more, we have seen that while the League stays nonpartisan, the issues that surround us have become increasingly polarized. When we advocate for or against policies, we do so based on our mission and values, and rooted in our commitment to the issues and to strengthening civic institutions, not out of allegiance to any political party.
LWVMD urges everyone to put aside perceived partisanship and remember our core mission: Empowering Voters, Defending Democracy. That mission includes holding elected officials to account. They are no longer candidates. As elected public servants, they hold a responsibility to all their constituents, not just those who agree with them.
The League of Women Voters was founded in protest and will continue to fight for the rights that make democracy work. We will continue to show up and fight for your rights not only at the polling place, but anywhere democracy is threatened. We will persist through the name calling, negativity, and threats against us.
We ask that you, our members, do the same. Strength recognizes strength. Our strength has always been the determination of our members to speak truth to power, engage their communities, and fight for the policies that provide equity and a better life for all Marylanders. Right now, we are stronger than ever.
