LWV WINTER EVENTS
EDUCATIONAL AND FUN
Those League members
who attended the LWVMD Workshops in January had a real League-like
experience. First there was lively discussion with League friends over
coffee, then a choice of educational workshops – global climate change,
or League communications via email and website, or how to be a great
League treasurer.
These were followed
by a nice lunch with Report from State Circle (RSC) reporters as
our entertainment, reporting on the issue area each covers in the
General Assembly in Annapolis. State League
workshops are open to all League members in the state, and if you
haven’t participated in the past, my advice is: “try it – you’ll like
it.”
The RSC
Reporters informed us about pre-filed and early bills in this year’s
General Assembly Session as well as prospective bills not yet filed. We
can expect attempts to roll back the tax on computer services, repeat
attempts to legislate marriage equality and to repeal the death penalty,
serious consideration of the state’s transportation needs, and a bill to
require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote.
Report from State
Circle is published about
every two weeks during the session. It’s a great way to keep up with
how League issues are faring in our legislature.
Our next state
League event is Legislative Day in Annapolis, when we have the
opportunity to meet with our legislators, to hear budget guru Warren
Deschenaux give us his wry but accurate assessment of Maryland’s fiscal
situation and to meet Lt. Governor Anthony Brown, who will speak with us
about how BRAC (base realignment and closures) issues are affecting
Maryland and how the needs are being addressed. Join us on Wednesday,
February 27th for this working League Day.
