The League is a three-tier organization that provides a League presence and opportunity for citizen education and action at the natoinal, state, and local levels.

The League of Women Voters of the United States works at the national and international level. All fifty State Leagues are affiliated with LWVUS.

InterLeague Organizations consist of Local Leagues who share a common interest, such as all being part of a metropolitan area. Thirteen Local Leagues in Maryland, Virginia, and the District form the National Capital Area ILO.

Local Leagues (known as LLs) are usually based on county or city boundaries and are affiliated with their State League.
