ELECTION OF NATIONAL CONVENTION DELEGATES

Presidential nominees are not elected directly by the voters in the primary. The results of the presidential primary in Maryland for each party will determine how many delegates will be pledged to each candidate at their respective national conventions. The Democratic and Republican primary ballots will list people who are running as delegates to their respective conventions. These are the people who will officially elect their party’s presidential nominee.

The Democratic National Convention will be held from August 25 to 28, 2008 in Denver, CO.

The Republican National Convention will be held from September 1 to 4, 2008 in St. Paul, MN.

DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION

Maryland will send 99 delegates and 12 alternates to the Democratic National Convention in 2008. They will include 46 delegates and 7 alternates elected at Maryland's primary election on February 12, 2008, by the registered Democratic voters in each Congressional district. The Democratic State Central Committee also will select 15 at large delegates, 11 at large alternates and 9 party leaders and elected officials. The remaining 29 delegates are to include State party and elected officials and members of Congress. National Convention delegates are allocated so as to fairly reflect the presidential preferences of the primary voters in each district. However, those candidates receiving less than 15% of the votes will not be allotted any delegates. In order to insure equality in the number of men and women delegates, assignment of delegate positions will be by alternating sex and continue with the next highest vote-getting preferences in descending order.

A total of 4,322 delegates from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and American Samoa will attend the Democratic Convention.

REPUBLICAN CONVENTION

Maryland is allotted 37 delegates and 34 alternates to the 2008 Republican National Convention. Twenty-four delegates and alternates will be based on primary election results in each of the eight Congressional Districts. The Presidential contender receiving the most votes in each District will receive all three of that District’s convention delegates. The remaining 13 at-large delegates and alternates will be chosen by the Republican State Central Committee and will include party leaders.

A total of 2,509 delegates from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and American Samoa will attend the convention.
