The League of Women Voters is a three-tiered organization that provides a League presence and opportunity for citizen education and action at the national, state, and local levels.

Local Leagues (known as LLs) are the grassroots foundation of the LWV and are typically defined by county or metropolitan area. All LLs are supported and overseen by their State League, in our case, the League of Women Voters of Maryland (LWVMD).

An Inter-League Organization (ILO) consists of state and local Leagues who share a common interest, such as all being part of a geographic region. Eleven local Leagues in Maryland, Virginia, and the District form an ILO called the League of Women Voters of the National Capital Area (LWVNCA).

The League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) works at the national and international level.
