Since 1920, the League of Women Voters has been the leader
among organizations who care about democracy; who work to ensure that
all citizens and voters have an unfettered role in making democracy
work; and who, year in and year out, schedule all forms of voter
service and education projects to enable a participatory and informed
electorate.
What Are Some of the Things We Do?
- Independently or in cooperation with other citizen groups, we hold
voter registration drives to promote increased participation in
elections.
- We produce many varieties of publications that deal with voter service and education, such as:
- Information about the composition of the legislature and how
they can be reached and contacted;
- Information about county and local
government and where to go for help in the communities;
- Brochures with tips about how to watch a debate to learn
more about the candidates, their views and positions on issues, etc. Or
tips
on how to get the most out of a candidate forum.
- Independently or in cooperation with the media or other
citizen groups, we sponsor and conduct debates and forums at election
time.
- Throughout the State, LWV provides printed voters guides at election time with solid candidate-supplied information about their
positions on various issues. In 1998, this service was significantly
expanded to take advantage of the Internet capability which thousands
of citizens now use to get information. We did that by producing Voters
Guides Online for many counties in the State. We also participated in a
nation-wide project which provided interactive messaging by candidates
willing and interested in getting their views out on the Internet.
- Independently or in cooperation with other interested
groups, we sponsor or serve as coordinators and facilators of
non-partisan forums on controversial issues facing the State or
Counties, with the objective of providing clear, complete information
on both sides of issues, so that citizen and community action can act
on the best possible information.
- And we are proud of our willingness to do community
service projects with groups who seek unbiased, non-partisan
information on issues and
elections.
