The grassroots nature of the League is represented in Study,
Positions, and Action. Study, adopted by the members, leads to
Positions, developed by the members, which leads to Action, carried out by
the members.
HOW WE DECIDE
Delegates to each biennial LWVMD convention (conventions
are held during odd years) reconfirm existing Positions and adopt
Studies for the next two year period. Our Action agenda is determined
by the LWVMD board, with input from Local Leagues, prior to each
session of the General Assembly and also as issues arise during the
year.
WE HAVE A NEW STUDY--THEN WHAT?
After adoption of a Study, the LWVMD board appoints a Study Committee
which researches the issues, prepares informational material for
members, and develops questions on which member agreement (consensus)
is sought. The consensus is then reformatted into Positions, made known
to members, and becomes our basis for Action.
WHAT ARE OUR ACTION TOOLS?
Although we take Action at all levels of League--national, state and local--
our tools are similar. Here are some of the ways LWVMD takes Action on issues:
- Present testimony to committees of the General Assembly and to commissions
established by the General Assembly.
- Issue Action Alerts so that members are able to lobby their legislators.
- Write letters and articles for local media.
- Provide information for Report from State Circle, a League publication.
- Join coalitions with the same goals as the League.
- Monitor implementation of legislation.
DO WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Yes, we do! We promote informed discussion of issues, and we have often
heard a legislator, or others attending hearings, say "The League is
here." What a tribute to our professionalism, objectivity, and "staying
power"!
