The League of Women Voters of Maryland was one of the many sponsors of the extremely well attended January 27 Women’s Legislative Briefing. Registration was closed after more than 800 people from around the state signed up for the free event which was held in Montgomery County. In addition to opening remarks by County Executive Ike Leggett from Montgomery County and Jack Johnson for Prince George's County, attendees were addressed by Representative Albert Wynn, Representative Chris Van Hollen, and Senator Ben Cardin. Irene Natividad, president of the Global Summit of Women, gave a rousing key note address about how women need to continue to seek an equal role in both business and government and gave some compelling reasons why. She promoted a strategy for gaining equal power by focusing on what women have to offer rather than on what they “need”. Workshops included panels on Immigration, Advocacy, Health Care, Women and the Law, and Electing Women to Office. Nancy Soreng
