ENVIRONMENT Thursday, January 18, 2008 was a “Green Letter” day for Maryland environmentalists! That snowy day, over 400 dedicated environmentalists gathered in Annapolis on the Lawyers Mall across from the Maryland State House, for a rally to kick off their legislative campaign for the
2008 Global Warming Solutions Act. The goal of the act is to require all businesses and institutions in Maryland to reduce global warming by 90% by 2050! Provisions in the bill will create a system of financial rewards and meaningful punishments to force those entities to reduce their emissions. The bill will be sponsored in the Senate by Senator Pinsky (17 sponsors were already signed on ) and in the House by Delegate Kumar Barve and many attending delegates signed on as co-sponsors at the rally. As of this date the bill has not been introduced, but, this is expected shortly. This bill is the primary focus of the Maryland environmental community for the 2008 legislative session and is being heavily lobbied for passage. It is the key environmental piece needed to build upon for other much needed environmental legislation and deserves the efforts of all Marylanders to ensure its passage and signing into law!
